Environmental Microbiology Research and Education at Georgia Tech

These are exciting times in the biological sciences as the 21st century has been host to some of the most innovative and remarkable advances in technology, science and engineering ever witnessed. These advances, occurring at the intersections of engineering and science disciplines, require a truly interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and engineers in order to address complex, ‘whole’ systems in ways never before possible.  Moreover, the education and training of future undergraduate and graduate students in these diverse disciplines will also require an integrated and interdisciplinary approach.

Faculty members from the Schools of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering have embarked on the development of a program in Environmental Systems Microbiology to study the dynamic, coupled interactions between microorganisms and the environment. A goal of the program will be to empower faculty to create and maintain strong competitive standing in the environmental science arena that includes research objectives to improve the quality of life, promote human health and develop environmental sustainability strategies.
